25 Days: A Proven Program to
Rewire Your Brain, Stop Weight
Gain, & Finally Crush the Habits
You Hate Forever
Dre w Logan, with Myatt Murphy. North Star
Way, $25.99 (256p) ISBN 978-1-5011-6298-5
After suffering three successive cardiac
arrests and going into a coma, celebrity
trainer Logan (NBC’s Strong) had to
devise a less
What he came
up with was
his efforts into
five consecutive blocks of five days each
and then assessing those efforts a “grade”
meant to trigger the release of the feel-
good chemical dopamine, encouraging
program commitment. The plan itself is
straightforward, calling for three meals,
snacks, and some form of exercise daily,
but many may find the provided recipes
daunting—some call for time-intensive
prep and such esoteric ingredients as
coconut flour and bison—or struggle to
follow the workout schedule, which is
somewhat confusing. More helpful are
charts listing appropriate portion sizes,
and clearly photographed exercises.
Logan’s plan will inspire some to adopt
healthier practices, but those searching
for a sustainable, long-term solution are
unlikely to be convinced. Agent: Heather

The Mystery of Sleep:
Why a Good Night’s Rest Is
Vital to a Better, Healthier Life
Meir Kryger. Yale Univ., $28 (336p)
Kryger, a Yale Medical School professor
and recognized sleep expert, seeks to educate readers about the effects of sleep disorders on daily (and nightly) lives. He
stresses that “the one thing scientists are
certain of” about sleep is that insufficient
amounts interfere with people’s ability to
think clearly and perform complex tasks.
Part one of the book discusses physiolog-
ical basics and sleep’s role at each stage of
life, from infancy to old age, with specific
chapters on how changing reproductive
and growth hormone levels affect sleep.
Part two is concerned with identifying
sleep disorders, resetting the body clock,
and coping with a world of constant distractions. Part three addresses insomnia
and its probable causes at length, plus
facts, signs, and symptoms of conditions
that disrupt sleep: restless leg syndrome,
sleep apnea, narcolepsy, medical and
psychiatric conditions, and drugs prescribed for common health conditions.
Part four, the most useful section, describes
where to get help for common recurring
problems, whether that means visiting a
sleep clinic, beating insomnia with cognitive behavioral therapy, or taking sleep
medication. Kryger’s self-help book ably
marries science with a doctor’s advice, but
reveals little that isn’t already available

“Client Story” sidebars illustrate successful practices and brief “Put It in
Action” summaries at chapter ends are
useful reminders of small and manageable changes to incorporate into one’s
life. In addition to nutrition, Vicario
covers the well-stocked pantry, “
stress-free” cooking, exercise, relationship
tips, and a few out-of-the-ordinary
subjects (tongue scraping, mask treatments). Lifestyle change “doesn’t have to
be complicated,” Vicario insists, and for
determined readers, this book may well
be the impetus for transformation.
